Director & High School Coordinator

Sonita Herath (Soni) was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Southern Maryland. She graduated from Towson State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Marketing. Upon graduating, she worked in marketing and sales for the largest custom photographic lab in the Mid–‐Atlantic region.

After one year, she was recruited by an upstart, digital imaging and photographic firm. Joining the firm with only 10 employees, Sonita, as head of marketing and sales, helped grow the company to become a national leader in digital imaging and photographic printing with a staff of nearly 100. Clients she represented included The Discovery Channel, The Smithsonian Institution, PBS and a variety of government agencies. She enjoyed 20 years with the company.

In mid 2006 she moved with her family to the warmer latitude of South Florida. For two years she worked part–‐time as a marketing assistant to wealth advisors at Morgan Stanley while her son attended a small private school in Stuart, Florida. While working part–‐time, she volunteered at her son’s school and chaired their yearly gala and fundraiser.

After leaving the firm, she started an entirely new chapter in her life…education. It started small; one child, her own. She worked with teachers and specialist and learned how to “homeschool”. She researched curriculum and turned every opportunity into a learning one. After a successful year for her son, she met Cindy and was introduced to The Academic Link. Soni started with The Academic Link in the fall of 2011. She worked with students in vocabulary and history during her first year. Later, she accepted the position of administrative assistant as well as supporting the entire staff of The Academic Link.

When not working, Soni enjoys boating, tennis, travel and relaxing at home. Last year she joined friends and family on her first mission trip with Viva Kids to the Dominican Republic where many children touched her heart. Locally, she supports The House of Hope in Martin County in memory of her mother, Tess. Food drives, stocking shelves, separating food and helping families during the holidays are a few of the activities.

Soni resides in Palm City, Florida with her husband Matt, son Tyler, and dog, Ringo Starr.
